February 2018 Wrap Up

Unfortunately, despite my best intentions, I never got around to doing a February TBR post. However, I did have a plan for the month. Also unfortunate, it kind of went to pot. That said, I’m far enough ahead in most of my yearly challenges, that I can live with it.

Challenge Updates

2018 Pages Goal: 40,150                     Current Status: 1840 pages AHEAD of schedule

2018 Books Goal: 85                            Current Status: 10 books AHEAD of schedule

2018 Galley Goal: 52                             Current Status: 6 books AHEAD of schedule

2018 Chunkster Goal: 10                      Current Status: 3 AHEAD of schedule

2018 Uber Chunkster Goal: 10             Current Status: 1 BEHIND schedule

2018 Beat the Backlist (TBR):  30         Current Status: 4 BEHIND schedule

Overall, doing pretty darn well, I’d say, but the year is young, and I know there will be slumps along the way. The Uber Chunkster Challenge is starting to feel like I bit off more than I can chew, but I’m not making adjustments just yet.

As for my Backlist/TBR Challenge, I’ll close that gap during Readathons I suspect. There are three more I plan to participate in this year.

Now on to my reading month:

February TBR Successes

Started/Still Reading
Planned Reads
February DNF’s

This book is one of those that is being talked about, that is already on “lists”, and has a fairly high rating of 4.17 on Goodreads (though there are only 296 ratings, so we’ll see later in the year). But it wasn’t for me. The writing style was confusing, the story was difficult to connect with, as well as the characters. I just couldn’t continue.

Unplanned Reads

February TBR Fails

TBR

If it hadn’t been for my unplanned reads (dang library holds!), I would have gotten Murder of Crows read and made more progress in Winter of the World. Other complicating factors included:

  • Not planning for book club read (remedied via a placeholder in future months)
  • Replacing my DNF with a book nearly three times as long
  • Forgetting about the Olympics (if it had been the summer games, or if they had done a better job of covering figure skating, it would have been MUCH worse)
  • Not accounting for my kids being out of school for a week
  • Forgetting February is a busy planning month for me in terms of prepping for my vegetable garden – we have a super short growing season, but I have to get my seed orders in early, get my grow “room” set up in the garage, get some seeds started…
  • Not anticipating all my library holds coming in at once (which I’ve remedied by cancelling all but a few at my local library, and by suspending many of my digital holds for a month or two)

Hopefully, I’m better prepared for March, and with three more days than February, I should be able to squeeze in at least one more book. 😉

How did your reading month go?

    • The Chunkster Challenge used to be hosted by a blogger named Vasilly, but they appear to have stopped blogging in 2015, so I’ve been doing it on my own. A “chunkster” is a book over 450 pages. An “uber chunkster” is over 750 pages. 😀
