Summary: Rose Gallagher, a housemaid for a gentleman whom she has growing feelings for (unbeknownst to him), finds herself in the midst of a mystery of the paranormal kind when he goes missing. Not satisfied that the police are taking his disappearance seriously, Miss Gallagher feels compelled to find him herself. Having grown up in the rough and tumble part of New York known as Five Points, she has a less than healthy amount of fear, and her feelings for Mr. Wiltshire prove an extremely effective motivator. However, her pursuits will take her places she never could have imagined, changing her life forever.

Review: So. Much. Fun. I loved this book! It reminded me of two of my favorite series: The Invisible Libraryby Genevieve Cogman and Veronica Speedwellby Deanna Raybourn. Not as fantastical as The Invisible Libraryand Rose is a very different character from Veronica, but there is an underlying theme that they share, and which I find very appealing.

Rose is a strong female character in a time period when women, especially poor Irish women, didn’t dare have dreams of more. Despite the danger to herself and odds being against her, she doggedly pursues the mystery of her employer’s disappearance, breaking societal rules and breaking open a Pandora’s box of secrets that she can’t close back up. One mystery turns into a greater mystery, and she finds that she is motivated by a great deal more than her feelings for her employer. She loves the adventure of it! And I absolutely fell in love with her.

It feels as though this book was written as the first in a series, and I dearly hope that is true. There is clearly a lot more to Rose’s story, and if I’d had access to the next in series, I would have jumped straight into it. What better recommendation can I give than that?

  1. Wonderful review Myndi. Is this a cozy mystery? It sounds like it might be considered in the genre. It sounds interesting and if you are ready to read the next one already, I think I better check it out.

    • I’m not sure that it’s technically a cozy, but I think it would appeal to lovers of that genre. There is a…lightheartedness?…in cozies that this book lacks. I’d say it’s a pretty traditional mystery, but with a paranormal aspect. There is a hint of romance, but nothing sexy. I’m not sure if I’m enticing you or not, but based on what you like, I do think you’d really enjoy this.
