My Year in Reading

In 2022, I conservatively aimed for 20 books in my Goodreads Challenge. I made it to 17. The exact same number I managed in 2021. It was 22 the year before that. Based on that trend, I once again challenged myself to 20 books in 2023, and miraculously, I’ve already hit 27. Five years ago, that is not a number I would have been happy about nearing the end of July, but this year, it’s a definite win.

Once I found my groove, I considered upping my challenge, but I’ve decided not to put that pressure on myself with so much of the year left. A lot could happen in the next five months, and I refuse to put myself in a space where I feel bad about not meeting my goal just because I changed it midway. My goal was 20 based on what I knew about myself in that moment. Whatever number I reach this year will inform my goals for 2024. But for 2023, I’m going to revel in how much progress I’ve made in recommitting myself to something that is such a fundamental part of who I am. Not reading has a negative impact on my mental health, so if I do nothing else for myself, I’m doing this. And I’m going to let myself feel good about this win as it is.

That said, I also refuse to add pressure by overcommitting to other challenges. Maybe when I’m in a more solid routine, but not this year. My only goal is to read as much as I can, to read what I want, and dip my toe back into the community, however that might look.

Since I’m essentially starting over, for 2023, this page will simply list my reads for 2023 with any reviews that I’ve written linked as always. If a review exists, you can click on the pertinent book cover below and/or go to my Reviews page, listed just below the header.
