Monday Update

Hi, there! Still working on getting back on track with my posting, still aiming for twice a week, with at least one review and one  general update (aiming for Mondays!).

After weeks of miserable, sticky heat here in Maine (our 3rd summer here, so far the warmest and stickiest), things seems to be back to normal for this time of year (thank the gods!). Pleasant during the day and at least a 10 degree drop at night. I’ll take it! It’s rained enough that, despite my negligence, the few plants in my vegetable garden this summer are doing exceedingly well.

Three weeks until my kids go back to school! And this year, we’re really excited about it. It has been a weird and strange summer, and we never really found our groove. One of my kiddos had ESY (extended school year – summer school for kiddos in special education programs), so for half the summer, we still had to do the school routine, but only for a half day. Great for him, but hard for us to do much in the way of activities like we did last year.

Though we didn’t do a lot of the things we normally would, we did fit in a trip to Franklin Park Zoo in Boston, which was wonderful. And we’re headed to the New England Aquarium on Wednesday, which we are super excited about. Then a day trip to Bangor in two weeks, to visit Maine’s Children Museum AND…go see Stephen King’s house!!! Honestly, I’m feeling equal amounts of excitement and awkwardness about going by his house. I know people do it all the time, but that’s sort of the thing…people do it ALL the time. I wonder how many looky-loo’s he gets in a day. And how would I feel about that if I were him? As an introvert with anxiety issues, not great. So, I’m a little torn. What do you think?

As for my reading life, I just finished The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager (so, so good!!!), I might finish Winter of the World by Ken Follett in this century (seriously, I’m more than half way done!), and I just started The Education of a Coroner by John Bateson, which I immediately fell in love with. I’m trying to refrain from requesting because I have to make some progress on my backlog first, so I have no new approvals to share.

That’s about it! I’ve got several things going on this week (Dr.’s appt’s, the trip to Boston, and a day trip to Manchester, NH for the New England Quilt Show!), but I’ll do my best to keep up with all of you!

  1. Hey stranger!! Nice to hear from you again! We have rain just about every day this week! We were supposed to go to Niagara Falls on Saturday but didn’t because they said it was going to rain……so we stayed home and you guessed it…….no rain!! Grrrrr! My 16 year old had to do summer school and she takes her state tests on Thursday and Friday……she passed the classes but failed the exams! So she basically only had two weeks of summer after school got out and then two before she goes back. Do you think she learned her lesson?🤔

Have fun at the aquarium and I would totally drive by King’s house!!😂

    Have a great week!😊💖

    • Have you been to Niagara Falls yet? Are you going to the Canadian side? I love, love, LOVE Niagara Falls, but the Canadian side puts the US side to shame. My daughter and I did our first Canadian vacation to Niagara Falls, Toronto and Montreal when she was 10(ish), and it was amazing. Niagara Falls was our favorite part by leaps and bounds. I hope you get to go soon!!!

Ugh, I would think losing the entire summer to summer school would be a future deterrent for most teenagers. 😉

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great week yourself. 😀

    • Yeah, we’re doin’ it. I was researching and apparently there are tours that will take you around to all the places he referenced in his books. Something I’ll go back and do on my own during the school year, since it’s not that far away. 🙂

  2. I can’t believe how fast summer has gone. It is nice to be able to do things with your kids over the summer, but it is also nice to get them back to school. I spent a lot of time with my grandchildren this summer, but just here at my place hanging out and swimming. I have also gone to several plays/musicals in large and small theatres with my sisters and friend. I saw Music Man, Wicked, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Book Club (not like the movie) and have Birds and Bees and Menopause coming up.

I want to read The Last Time I Lied very much. I have heard a lot of good things about it. I am trying not to request, but when I read what others are reading, it is so hard. My backlist is huge. Enjoy the rest of your summer.

    • Ooohhh!! I saw Wicked in NYC back in maybe 2005…such a fabulous show! That’s awesome that you have people close by to do those sorts of things with.

Ha! Just request it already. Totally worth being one more book behind, I promise. And my backlist…makes me sick to my stomach to even think about. Eager to get back to reading more regularly and making some sort of dent in the next year or so.

Have a great rest of the summer yourself!
