24 in 48 Kick Off Post: January 2018

Despite having spent the entire week preparing for it (I’ll explain in a moment*), I still feel as though this Readathon snuck up on me! I believe this is my second 24 in 48 Readathon, I found it when I was looking for something to fill the long gap between Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon (twice yearly), and this was perfect. If you want more specific details about 24 in 48, check out the link here. Below, I’ll tell you what I love about it:

  • Ummm…it’s a readathon. Frankly, I’m not sure why I’d need to say anything more than that, but…
  • The format allows more flexibility for participants who may have to work or have plans on the weekend. The goal is to read 24 hours total in a 48 hour period (from 12:01am Saturday until 11:59pm on Sunday, preferably EST). That allows for things like sleep, a trip to the market, a kids sports event, a bit of work, or whatever, which means participants can do other things, and still fully participate.
  • It’s wide open in terms of choice: read what you want. There are no goals around genre or galleys or old vs. new. Again, I say, the goal is to read 24 hours total in a 48 hour period (from 12:01am Saturday until 11:59pm on Sunday, preferably EST).ย Which is really appealing to people like me who run when they feel too constricted. Not that I don’t appreciate TBR Readathons and the like (hell, I need those!), but I just fare better when the goal is time-oriented and nothing more.
  • 24 in 48 is every January and July, which fits in nicely with Dewey’s schedule of April and October. With young kids (busy, busy), and working on my degree, and just adult life in general, it isn’t possible for me to do all the ‘thons. But one weekend every 3 months? Doable.
  • As with any readathon, the community interaction is half the fun. I’ve “met” some amazing people on platforms I don’t use as much (e.g. Twitter), people I would have been highly unlikely to have found otherwise, all because of readathons. What’s not to love about that?

My husband has triplet duty all weekend. Currently, I plan to do the entire readathon locked in my room. I may sneak over to the library tomorrow, as they are open from 10am-2pm on Saturdays, but hubs is taking the kids to a birthday party from 1pm-2:30pm (which means silence in the house!), so I’m just goin’ with the flow.

Because my husband is “going it alone” for the weekend, I plan to read as many hours as a I possibly can. Mentally, 24 hours is a bare minimum (an attitude I’m sure I’ll regret sorely later). Wish me luck! You can follow me on Twitter, which is likely where I’ll do most of my updates. And join in if you can! It isn’t too late to sign up and it’s so much fun.

*Preparation for a readathon? What are you talking about? Well, first of all, you have to have snacks and beverages. Like special “this is what I deserve because it’s Readathon” kind of snacks and beverages. And maybe a trip to the library because books (and yeah, I have 1000+, but the library still has some I don’t). But mostly making sure that the house is in order so that trying to match up socks isn’t something my husband has to worry about while I’m having a reading stay-cation. I would want someone to do the same for me. And since I’m never on the ball, getting caught up (and trying to get all my homework done!) for a relaxing reading weekend is a little hectic. ๐Ÿ˜€

    • Well, first, it’s about the amount of snacks. Like, normally I’d go to the store and come home with a bag of chips or some cookies for a normal week. But all bets are off on a Readathon weekend.

And since I was home this time (I sometimes go out of town for Readathon weekends), my husband made me a dutch crust apple pie. Delicious!

    • We all survived, and I think each time it gets easier for my husband. Also, the kids brought in stacks of books several times and sat quietly and read along with me, which was pretty neat.
