Weekly Update #10

Wow. I haven’t done a weekly update in two months! Since I’m a few days behind on my update for the 24in48 Readathon this past weekend, I figured, why not just do a general update, yeah?

In every day, non-reading life news, I’ve started cooking again. My husband is pretty passionate about cooking, but he doesn’t get home in time to meal prep for the family, and I’m kind of done with my kids food inflexibility. So, I’ve been making simple meals, aiming towards the kids trying new things, but cooking things I think they might actually eat, and it’s been relatively successful. Truth be told, I don’t really love cooking. And I’ll never be a master chef. But I have absolutely fallen in love with my broiler. In LOVE.

The downside of cooking, and one of the reasons that I typically dread it, knives and I don’t really get along (nor pots of hot pudding, or pans full of sizzling bacon grease). I’ve got multiple scars on my hands from my cooking battle wounds, and I’m just not a big fan of, I don’t know, slicing through the tip of my thumb, nail and all, while chopping onions. Which is what happened last Wednesday night. Probably time to schedule a tetanus booster…

As for my reading, the 24in48 was super successful. I read for a total of 17 hours and 54 minutes, read 1670 pages, and finished seven books and started an eighth. See? Successful! Of course, now I have a reading hangover and I haven’t touched a book since midnight on Sunday, but I plan to change that tonight.

I’m also 12 books ahead on my Goodreads Challenge!

Yes, that’s a LOT of approvals. No, I have NOT been good about refraining from requesting. BUT, in my defense, several of these are children’s or instructional (knitting, cross-stitching, dietary), so it isn’t as bad as it seems. Right? Right?!?!? (Warning: this weeks approvals aren’t much better and it isn’t even over yet…)

Finally, I got auto-approved for Kensington! I have three previous auto-approvals for super small publishers, but this is my first for a major imprint. Kind of exciting!

    • In all honesty, I shouldn’t have been cooking that day. I hadn’t planned to, but then my husband asked about dinner, and I convinced myself I had time to throw something together, but then it turned out I didn’t have everything I needed and it was too late to go to the store, and I had the timing off on prep, and the kids were having one of those crazy afternoons…my mind wasn’t in it and I was super stressed. Lesson learned. 🀣

  1. Sounds like a great week to me. Sorry about your battle wounds. I love cooking and baking but don’t have anyone to do it for very often. I had 21 new books last week and all but 2 were novels. I will never get over 60% on Netgalley.

    • I love baking! My first real job was in a deli/bakery when I was 16, and by the time I left, I could make everything on offer (and often did). One of these days, I will get back to it.

      Carla, you make me feel so much better about my approvals, but then I’m drooling over your 60%. If I left my family and lived in the woods like Thoreau for a few years, I MIGHT get to 60%. 🀣🀣🀣

  2. Congratulations on getting autoapproved for Kensington! And take care in the kitchen. I know where you are coming from. . . I have plenty of scars of my own. It is worth learning how to chop and dice correctly (You Tube) I am much less of a kitchen klutz now. Great haul. I need to get a copy of The Keto Diet! Happy reading πŸ’•πŸ“š

    • You’d think with my home chef husband and a decade of watching cooking shows with him that I might have absorbed some technique. πŸ˜€
      That is a GREAT suggestion though. YouTube is such a big help as I’m a visual learner.

  3. Good luck with cooking! I used to be a nanny and cooking for the kids was a pain in the ass. They would eat basically three things… any other food was met with hours of crying.
    I can’t wait to get my hands on the Lost Man πŸ˜ƒ

    • Thanks! We’ve prioritized them eating without a fuss over “real” dinners up til now. Hubs and I would eat after they went to bed. But I decided it was time. They’re eight. They are going to start going to sleepovers and having meals at other people’s houses, and frankly, I want to eat somewhere besides McDonald’s when we travel. πŸ˜€

      Does The Lost Man come out the same time for you? Different countries often have different release dates, yes?

  4. Wow I’m so happy for you with how good your reading has gone!! I’m sorry to hear about your finger though!! I’m not a fan of cooking either I usually burn things when I cook…even simple things! I’m the type who can burn water XD I try though!

    • Thanks! There are so many different skill sets involved in cooking, my shortcoming is definitely knife skills. Time management, however, is my strong suit.

      Keep trying! And take advantage of YouTube videos. While I was making easy meals at around 10, I never really learned to broil, and YouTube has saved me in that regard.

    • Careful is now the name of the game. And if I’m not mentally prepared, I’m not cooking. Still, I’ve managed to get dinner on the table at least three nights a week without further incident (knock on wood).
